Town Alpine Series crosses the finish line

Dancing bears, neon one-piece outfits and speed suits accented with thong underwear sliced down Bald Mountain as skiers wrapped up the 13th annual Sun Valley and Budweiser Town Alpine Series. The race party was staged at Apples Bar & Grill at the base of Baldy.

Carl Rixon owned the race, finishing with a combined time of 51.85. Robin Sarchett followed in second, Biche Rudigoz third, Matt Murphy forth and J.J. Hanley fifth.

In the women’s field Sonja Mandeville upset Eltina Campbell for the win. Annie Stout grabbed third, Megan Thomas fourth and Sue Connor fifth. Mandeville finished 15th overall.

Wednesday’s race completed the series of seven. At the end of the series, the Idaho Tower team with John Campbell, Jen Campbell, Robin Sarchett and Steve Brown etched their names on the race cup for winning the overall team title. Members of Idaho Tower and the other top four teams, Rainbow Warriors, Carrera/Atomic, Kelly Sports and HCT/Sturtevants each had a chance to win a Bald Mountain season pass.

The luck of the Irish was with the Kelly Sports team with three members Lynn Johnson, Jim Tallackson and Marvin Melville winning a 2004-05 seasons’ pass. Curt Williams of HCT/Sturtevants was also a lucky winner.

Prizes also went to Chris Key for the Best Crash of the year, Sonja Mandeville as Most Improved Female and Matt Murphy as Most Improved Male.

Racers celebrated the end of the series and St. Patrick’s Day, feasting on Irish delights and earning prizes provided by generous Wood River businesses.
