Wood River tennis team hopes to court success

Wolverines all even in first week


The Wood River tennis team evened its record at 1-1 with an 11-1 victory over Gooding Wednesday.

Singles champions were Hadley DeBree (6-0, 6-0), Amanda Smith (6-2, 6-2), Ashley Prior (6-0, 6-1), Whit Harbaugh (6-1, 6-2), and Matthias Goeke (6-1, 6-3). Gooding won #1 boys singles with Satoshi Komuro defeating William Dubois 6-2, 6-2.

Hailey mixed doubles champions dropped only two games. Thomas Phelan and Whitney DeBree won #1 mixed, and Gavin Kastner and Kira Gardner claimed the second-seeded match.

Winning girls’ pairs were Abby Farmer/Ellie France and Devon Bunce/Natalie Safran.

Danny Gariepy and Richard Kelsey claimed #1 boys’ doubles. Will Roth and Kyle Niedrich won #2 boys.

Wood River looked strong in girls’ singles in a 9-3 loss to 5A powerhouse Twin Falls Tuesday.

The Wolverines swept their Bruin opponents in straight sets. Hadley DeBree won at #1 girls, 6-2, 6-2. The #2 match went to Amanda Smith by a 6-4, 6-3 score. Ashley Prior won the #3 match, 6-1, 6-1.

Thomas Phelan and Whitney DeBree fell in the #1 mixed doubles match 6-4 in the third set. Devon Bunce and Jackie Safran forced a third set in #2 girls’ doubles and before falling in the third set 6-4.

"It was hard to get out and play in the wind, but our kids battled pretty well," coach John Radford said.

Twin finished in fourth place at the 5A state tournament in 2003.

Wood River is on the road to take on Hillcrest of Idaho Falls today.
