Fast trails at Yellowstone

77 locals compete in Rendezvous

Fast trails were the rule, and fast times piled up at the 25th annual Yellowstone Rendezvous cross-country ski races Saturday. There were 811 racers. Finishing times were about 12 to 25 minutes faster than last March.

Ketchum’s Jon Engen and Brooke Baughman made their marks in the 50-kilometer freestyle race. Engen, 46, was fifth of 268 marathon finishers and Baughman, 31, captured the women’s title, in 17th place overall.

In all, there were 77 Wood River Valley racers in the field and 16 came away with age class victories.

Besides Engen and Baughman, they included Gabriele Andersen at 50k; George Livingston, Bob Rosso, Sean McLaughlin, Sarah Walker, Michael Dunham and Lili Simpson at 25k classic; Greg Thompson at 25k freestyle; Ned Wheeler, Dennis Donovan, Genie Swyers, David Harrison and Judy Harrison at 10k; and Nordic team racer Tess Dahlgren at 5k.

Ketchum’s Sarah Walker, 28, won the women’s 25k classic race and was 23rd overall of 128 finishers.

Sun Valley Junior Nordic ski teamers Mikey Matteson and Conor Davis placed 2-3 of 92 racers in the 5k skate. And fellow ski teamers Dawson Paschall and Robbie Hamlin were 3-4 at the 10k distance.

In the 25k classic race, ski teamer George Livingston sliced 20 minutes off his time from last year and finished fifth overall of 128 classic skiers.
