Freestylers spend weekend at Bogus

Moguls under the lights

Saturday night’s mogul competition at Bogus Basin was a new experience for the Sun Valley Freestyle Team. And it was a cold experience, with winds blowing about 40 miles an hour atop the course.

"It was cold and windy but fun—first time we’ve ever done night moguls," said coach Tom Kennedy, who took 14 skiers to the Boise ski area along with Sun Valley coach Keith Potter.

And the Sun Valley kids did a great job Saturday night, placing 2-3 overall among the girls with Britt VanPaepeghem and Sophia Schwartz, and capturing six age class wins.

The two-day Intermountain Division Bogus Basin Free Ski also consisted of Big Air and aerials and night moguls on Saturday, dual moguls Sunday.

Young Nathan Moses stepped it up big time in aerials, conquering his nerves to win the M5 class. Sophia Schwartz landed a 540 down a steep landing hill, and Karl Fostvedt did a Nifty Off-Axis 720 with a grab, basically a back flip with a twist.

Fostvedt won his age class, as did Moses. "Karl’s was probably the most impressive jump there," said Kennedy.

In Sunday’s duals, Sun Valley’s girls kicked serious butt with VanPaepeghem, Katie Fieguth, Schwartz and Lauren Phillips placing 2-3-4-6. Kurtis Fieguth finished seventh in the men’s elimination process.

Special notice went to Sun Valley’s Reed Boeger, who finished second in combined totals and was called "Mr. Consistency," by the announcer.

Next, coaches John Zuck and Andy Ware will take up to 20 Sun Valley skiers to the divisional championships Friday through Sunday in Utah. The local kids will race moguls Friday and dual moguls Saturday at Snowbird, then move over to Park City Sunday, March 7 for daytime half pipe and nighttime Big Air and aerial competition at Olympic Park.
