seasons
Sixth, fifth graders
Wood River fifth- and sixth-grade
Select girls’ and boys’ basketball teams recently wrapped up successful
winter seasons. Here is a report:
Coached by Ron Hayes, this year’s
fifth-grade girls’ team represented the Wood River Valley with a winning
season. They played three games and had one game cancelled due to
weather. The girls finished their season 2-1, with victories against
Filer Red (16-10), and Buhl (21-13).
In the Buhl game, Cassie Gorringe
led the team in scoring with 7 points and 4 rebounds. Kaitana Martinez
followed with 6 points, 1 rebound, and 3 assists. Taylor Gove scored 4
points and 1 rebound. Madison Gove and Tristin Bowers each landed a
bucket for the team.
Taylor Hayes, Natalie Goddard,
Eglantina Aguirre, Brooke Bowers, and Kylee Richmond contributed to the
win with great defensive play and rebounding.
The final game of the season was
played in Filer last weekend. Wood River played Filer White and lost in
overtime 21-19. The girls fought back to tie it in the last seconds of
regulation and sent it into overtime.
Gorringe led the way with 8 points
and 6 rebounds. Martinez added 6 points, 3 steals, 3 rebounds, 3 assists
while Aguirre had 6 steals.
Meanwhile, the Wolverine
sixth-grade boys finished their regular season 3-1 and are headed into
tournament play this weekend.
Their first season win came
against Wendell 26-14. Their following victories were against Filer
36-15, and Hagerman 36-18. A game with Castleford was cancelled due to
weather.
Their most recent game against
Buhl ended their undefeated status in a nail biter. Wood River lost
28-27 in the last seconds of the game.
In the Buhl battle, Jimmy Hague
led Wood River with 9 points, 5 rebounds and 1 assist. Keven Abbott
followed with 7 points, 1 steal, and 3 rebounds. Tyler Peters scored 5
points, had 3 steals, and topped the team with 6 rebounds. Cody Gibson
scored 4 points with 2 rebounds. Juan Martinez scored 2 points, had 2
steals, 1 rebound, and 1 assist.
Paul Davis dropped in a bucket for
2 points and added 1 assist. Ryan Dean played aggressive defense with 3
steals and 1 rebound. Jordan Doan provided 1 assist. Other players
contributing in all aspects of play were James Elfering, Jordan Flolo,
Gene Fairbrother, and Raul Salinas.
The boys travel to Rupert Thursday
to compete in the first round of the Idaho Youth Ranch tournament.
