New champs crowned
in Boulder Tour
Dussault, Schultz fastest in
32k race
A new mother and a new father are
the newly-crowned champions of the Wells Fargo Boulder Mountain Ski
Tour.
Colorado cross-country racers
Rebecca Quinn Dussault, 23, and Nathan Schultz, 32, captured the women’s
and men’s championships of the 29th annual American Ski Marathon Series
event staged Saturday morning north of Ketchum.

of Gunnison, Colo. and third-place Katrin Smigun of Estonia.

Dussault led the 361 female skiers
with a time of one hour, 29 minutes and 34.1 seconds, good for 37th
place overall. Schultz (1.23:17.2) outsprinted 2001-02 Boulder Tour king
Justin Wadsworth at the finish.
It was another victory in a
comeback season for Crested Butte Nordic Team product Dussault, one of
this country’s most promising junior skiers before she got married three
years ago and had a child, Tabor, now about two years old.
Dussault was the overall female
winner and sprint champion in the $100,000 Nor-Am Super Tour this
winter. In the process she won 10 of 16 races, and qualified for a slot
to compete in World Cup races in Europe over the next month.

Her goal is to compete in the 2006
Winter Olympics in Italy. And she moved a step closer by winning three
national titles at the 2004 U.S. Nordic Nationals in Maine early in
January.
Defending Boulder Tour champion
Brooke Baughman, 31, of Ketchum ended up fourth among women Saturday,
and 57th overall, two-and-a-half minutes behind Subaru Factory Team
racer Dussault.
Schultz, another Subaru FT racer
who was the third-place Boulder finisher last February, has spent 14
years ski racing but generally is one of those well-rounded persons who
finishes a little below the podium.
He runs a computer software
business, is a new father and directs the Subaru Factory Team academics
and coaching program in addition to being one of this country’s top
marathon skiers. Schultz won the 2000 American Ski Marathon Series
overall championship.

Saturday, the Boulder, Colo.
product saved a sprint to nip Atomic’s Wadsworth for the Boulder
victory. Ketchum’s Jon Engen, 46, was seventh overall just 1:41 behind
Schultz’s top time.
In general, finishing times were
15 to 20 minutes slower than last year’s record pace.
Friday night’s snowfall and a
south breeze up the canyon made the skiing a little tougher for the
all-time record 955 cross-country skiers who finished the 32-kilometer
(19.8-mile) race from Galena Lodge to the SNRA headquarters.
There was also a record in the
number of entries, 1048.

Wood River Valley racers did very
well—earning five age class wins and seven podiums in the women’s
summary, and five age class wins and nine podiums in the men’s results.
Most amazing of all class winners
was 81-year-old Phil Puchner of Bellevue. He finished, drum roll, next
to last with a time of four hours and change. Engen, Del Pletcher, Andy
Andrews and Richard Byerley also won their classes.
For the women, local age class
winners were Gabriele Andersen, Alison Bradley, Muffy Ritz, Sarah Walker
and Baughman. Ritz, 46, placed 100th overall, the ninth woman.
And one local racer actually
improved her time over last year. It was Julie Welty, 34, of Hailey, who
clipped 35 seconds off her 2003 finishing time.
2004 Boulder Mountain Ski Tour
Results
February 7, 2004, the 29th annual
32-kilometer (19.8-mile) cross-country ski tour. The course was the
historical trail starting at Senate Creek near Galena Lodge Touring
Center 23 miles north of Ketchum and ending at the Sawtooth National
Recreation Area headquarters 8 miles north of Ketchum. Title sponsor was
Wells Fargo.
Of the record 955 racers who
finished the course—30 more than last year—594 were male and 361 female.
Senior racers were Phil Puchner, 81, of Bellevue and Shauna Thoreson,
69, of Ketchum. The youngest, 10, was Betsy Neal of Jackson Hole, Wyo.
Of the 955 finishers, 203 or 21% of the total field listed Wood River
Valley addresses, meaning 79% came from out of the valley. There were 93
racers listed as DNFs in the final results.
Finishing times of the locals who
completed the American Ski Marathon Series course are listed by age
class in hours, minutes and seconds. Overall rankings appear after each
racer's name. Identified in bold are local age-class placers, and
overall winners.
