Powell wins
FIS speed race
SG at Big Sky
Former Sun Valley Ski Team racer Wes
Powell of Ketchum won the final race of the Western Region FIS Series "Big Sky
Speed Series" Jan. 28 at Big Sky, Mont.
Powell, 19, captured the super giant
slalom by .40 seconds over Samuel Sweetser, 19, of Maine in an 82-skier field.
It was Powell’s first FIS (International Ski Federation) victory. Earlier in the
day in another SG, he had finished second .15 seconds behind Eric Straw.
"I was on some fast skis and everything
kind of clicked. I’m happy with the results," said Powell, son of Tom and Annie
Powell.
Powell is a freshman on partial
scholarship at Montana State University and is one of four men on the MSU ski
team. Although he won at Big Sky in SG, his college coaches at Bozeman have
Powell racing giant slalom and slalom. Powell said he’d like to do more SG.
Next up for Powell and other older Sun
Valley racers: The Wild West Classic Western Region Elite GSs and SLs Feb. 7-10
at Jackson Hole, Wyo.
Sun Valley’s Cassidy Doucette also cracked
the top ten in SG, placing seventh and fifth overall among 46 women Jan. 27-28
at Big Sky.
In all, there were 139 racers, 90 men and
49 women, racing downhill and SG over four days at Big Sky. In the field were 18
Sun Valley skiers.
