Suns overtake Mountaineers 8-5, 5-4

Moose arrive this weekend

Sold-out crowds of about 750 hockey fans at McCall’s new Manchester Ice and Event Centre greeted the Sun Valley Suns and McCall Mountaineers for last weekend’s first-ever men’s senior hockey games there.

And the Suns and Mountaineers gave the fans a treat with two exciting and well-played hockey games. Sun Valley (5-1), scoring four third-period goals in each game, swept McCall’s former pros (0-2) by scores of 8-5 and 5-4.

Friday night the Suns broke open a back-and-forth 5-5 game with unanswered goals by John Stevens, Paul Baranzelli and Eric Demment to beat McCall 8-5 behind the 32 saves of fifth-year goalie Matt Gershater. Stevens and Baranzelli finished the night with two goals each.

Saturday’s game was just as tight and competitive. Suns coach Johnny Ellison said, "We won two games against a very tough team. But Saturday was a super game. And that McCall community was really behind its hockey team last weekend."

McCall led 3-1 after two periods, but rapid-fire goals by Luke Smith and Rohan Verplank tied it 3-3 early in the third period, then Chris King and Demment finished the scoring—Demment firing the game winner from the point on the Sun Valley power play.

Suns goalie Ryan Thomson made 24 saves.

The Suns forward line of King, Ryan Enrico and Baranzelli (a team-high 5 points) finished with 12 of 30 Suns points.

Next, the Suns host the Jackson Hole (Wyo.) Moose Friday and Saturday, Jan. 23 and 24 at 7 p.m. on Sun Valley ice. "Jackson Hole is our chief rival, and I think McCall will be right there soon," said Ellison about the Moose visit.

Jackson Hole (10-2) last split with the Denver Tailgators Jan. 9-10, winning the first game 13-3 then watching its nine-game winning streak come to an end 6-4 Saturday. The Moose hold a 15-8-1 advantage in the six-year series against the Suns, since 1997.
