Sophs dominate
All-Northside volleyball
Young players step up
The future is bright for Northside
Conference volleyball, if this season’s results and the 2003 All-Conference
selections are any indication of the good things to come.
As expected, the State 1A tournament
runner-up Shoshone Indians (33-3) filled many spots on the Northside first and
second teams. Shoshone fell to eight-time state champion Troy in four games when
the 1A state meet wrapped up Nov. 1 in Lewiston.
Of the top 12 vote-getters in the
Northside making up the first and second teams, seven were sophomores.
Leading the way were first-team sophomores
Katie Strunk and Hailey Harris of Shoshone. Other first teamers in order of
points: Senior Ayleen Sorensen of Dietrich, freshman Cassie Wood of Richfield,
senior Sarah Hubsmith of Shoshone and sophomore Breanna McAlister of Richfield.
"Coaches of the Year" in the Northside
were 25th-year Shoshone coach Larry Messick and eighth-year Camas County coach
Becky Skinner.
Carey senior Cheyanne Bingham made the
second team along with four sophomores and one other senior, Kari Engelstad of
Camas County.
The second-team sophomores were Beth McLam
of Camas County, Caitlin Dill of Dietrich, Kyli Astle of Shoshone and Kallie
Axeson, also of Shoshone.
Three Carey sophomores made All-Northside
honorable mention along with two juniors from The Community School of Sun
Valley.
Carey’s selections were Jessica Royal,
Whitney Peck and Amy Olsen. The Community School picks were Jackie Goddard and
Ashley Alfs.
Other honorable mentions went to senior
Mariah Burk of Bliss, senior Grayce Backstrom of Camas County, senior Janet
Ellis of Richfield and senior Michelle Anderson of Dietrich.
Juniors were Juteik Weber and Lindsey Shaw
of Dietrich, and Meghan Sorensen of Shoshone, plus freshman Amber Ward of
Richfield.
Several of the Northside seniors took part
in the Fourth District Volleyball All-Star Players Showcase Nov. 5 at Twin Falls
High School gym.
Cheyanne Bingham of Carey and Alysse Gelet
of The Community School were members of the North East team coached by Brent
Clark of Jerome.
The North East went 1-2 in the series of
round-robin matches. Kari Engelstad of Camas was on the North West team coached
by Jolene Toone of Gooding that went 2-1.
