JV boys wrap up
9-2 season
For Wood River High
It was a productive and fun season for the
Wood River High School boys’ junior varsity soccer team coached for the second
year by Farrell Swain.
"The whole team was a solid unit and they
played together well," said Swain. "We did an awesome job of possessing the ball
and our passing improved each game of the season."
Wood River finished 9-2, losing only to
Capital of Boise 4-2 and Twin Falls 6-3. On offense, the team dominated with 54
goals scored (4.9 per game). On defense, the Wolverines yielded only 15 goals
(1.4 per game).
The Wolverines beat Minico, Burley, Declo,
Hillcrest of Idaho Falls, Twin Falls 3-0 and The Community School twice. A major
victory was a 3-1 win over Century in Pocatello Oct. 2.
"We came into the season raring to go and
won our first three games 3-0, 10-0 and 9-0. The kids thought they were rock
stars. Then the loss to Capital brought us back to earth," Swain said about her
20-player squad.
Providing outstanding leadership was
captain Spencer Cordovano, who did an awesome job at outside back, Swain said.
Captain Bryce Newcomb was a threat at center midfielder before he was brought up
to varsity.
The defense was such a strong group that
Swain found it hard to substitute on the back line. They were sweeper Reid
Pletcher, stopper Garrett Leo, Michael Dale and Cordovano.
Goalkeeper was Kenny Mauro.
Center midfielders were Spencer Flade and
Dima Springs, while the outside midfielders were Cory Rutkowski and Chad Levitan.
The strikers were prolific led by top
scorer Max Kwok (12 goals, 6 assists). Other forwards were Michael Kunz (8
goals, 1 assist), Carl Jablonski (7 goals, 1 assist) and Cooper McCroskey.
Swain said about her team of 10 sophomores
and 10 freshmen, "The sophomores did an awesome job of showing the freshmen the
ropes."
