WRHS handles
Wendell 7-2
Takes top seed into Thursday’s title
clash
Wood River is headed back to the State
3A boys’ soccer tournament—and more immediately headed for a home showdown
against arch-rival Community School Thursday, Oct. 23 at South Valley Sports
Complex, Hailey.
Coach Brian Daluiso’s #3-ranked
Wolverines (15-3-1) polished off #4-seeded Wendell 7-2 Monday in Hailey to
clinch a state tournament berth and a Thursday home game against the
Cutthroats for the championship of the eight-team meet.
Wood River, winner of 5-1 and 5-2 games
over the Cutthroats this season, will play Sun Valley team at 4 p.m. The
winner has the dubious distinction of starting the state meet with a game
against the Third District champ (Payette or McCall) Oct. 30 in Buhl.
Senior Chase Cleveland (15 goals, 39
goals career) scored a three-goal hat trick while top scorer Maicol Corrales
(31 goals, 51 career) added two goals for Wood River Monday. Single goals
against Wendell came from Byron Epp and Willie Meyers.
Last week Wood River posted 5-0 and 8-0
wins over Filer—in the process setting a new school single-season record for
goals scored. The Wolverines now have 107 goals in 19 games (5.6 per game), 14
more than the 93 scored by the 1987 Wolverine squad.
Wednesday’s league finale at Filer ended
up in a 5-0 Wolverine win with Cleveland scoring twice to go with single goals
by Corrales, Tate Mills (PK) and K.C. Rivera (11 goals).
Saturday, Wood River opened the league
tourney with an 8-0 rout of #8-seeded and shorthanded Filer. Corrales and
Byron Epp scored two goals apiece. Other goals came from Ted Dankanyin, Meyers
(8 goals), Shane Cordeau (10 goals) and Cleveland.
