JV finishes 14-0-1

Girls’ soccer team outscores foes 72-4

Talk about starting off on the right foot.

With 12 freshman and eight sophomores, the Wood River High junior varsity girls’ soccer team put the finishing touches on a 14-0-1 season with a pair of shutouts over Hillcrest and Bonneville Saturday.

"The girls were very excited," coach Greg Gvozdas said. "I think all their hard work paid off. They never lost sight of doing the little things: first touch, quality passes, and solid defense."

Wood River outscored its opponents 72 to 4 and never surrendered more than one goal a game. Goalies Ellen Ard and Gabby Sisson posted 10 shutouts. Offensively, 15 of the 20 players scored at least one goal over the season.

"It was a very good team effort," Gvozdas remarked.

Traveling to Idaho Falls Saturday, Wood River opened with a 4-0 victory over Hillcrest. Tara Cappell, Lauren Eder, Danielle Smith and Kimbra Turner scored.

The Wolverines turned up the jets for their final contest and blanked Bonneville 6-0. Goal scorers were Grayson Palmer, Ellen Ard, Calley Brown, Brianna Hull-Mullins, Eder and Cappell.

Also contributing to the Wolverine success this season were Nicole Schulz, Laura Speck, Kacie Femling, Devon Bunce, Simone Kastner, Kate Sawicz, Alexa Turzian, Katie Jensen, Danielle Smith, Stephanie Bird and Alix Cayce.

Earlier in the week, Wood River earned wins over Twin Falls (6-1) Tuesday and Declo (3-1) Thursday. Kaitlin Gasenica netted a hat trick against Twin Falls. Gasenica, Calley Brown and Tara Cappell scored against Declo.

Check next week’s Local Life for a team photo of the girls.
