Late TD passes
lift Carey

Panthers rally 40-36 past Oakley

It rained for most of the game, but it didn’t rain on Carey School’s parade when Thursday’s non-conference prep eight-man football dogfight at Oakley finally ended.

The Carey Panthers (3-2, 2-2 Sawtooth Conference) rallied from a 36-24 fourth-quarter deficit and beat Oakley 40-36.

Carey’s sophomore quarterback Tyler Cook (19-for-30 for 195 yards, 4 TDs) tossed 17-yard and 14-yard scoring aerials to Ty Simmons and Randy Lundergreen in the final period.

And Carey’s defense withstood a final assault from Oakley (0-5, 0-4), which was seeking its first win after four setbacks.

Carey coach Lane Kirkland said, "It was a dogfight. Oakley was a lot bigger and they hit us hard. But our kids really gutted it out in the fourth quarter. They played excellent football, and our defense held."

Top Carey scorer Lundergreen (27 rushes for 137 yards) scored four touchdowns—two rushing and two on pass receptions. He added six pass catches for 55 yards including the game-winning 14-yard toss from Cook with five minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Simmons also had a great offensive night with 10 catches for 120 yards and two TDs. He caught a pair of two-point conversion passes from Cook to account for Carey’s four-point winning margin.

Oakley drove to Carey’s 30-yard line late in the game, but abandoned their successful running attack. That played into Carey’s hands, and it was fortunate that holding and blocking-in-the-back penalties nullified two Oakley scores, according to coach Kirkland.
