Schmidt, Leugers heat up the hill climb

Baldy ascent on a hot September day

On a very warm September morning, 2003 Baldy Hill Climb winners Ryan Schmidt and Adrienne Leugers were among 187 climbers who completed the 1.86-mile ascent straight up the Warm Springs side of Baldy.

For 26-year-old Schmidt, it was the second consecutive Baldy Hill Climb overall victory. Schmidt did it in the fourth-fastest time (36:28) recorded in the climb’s 25 years.

Organizer Rick Kapala, head coach of the Sun Valley Junior Nordic ski team, said, "That’s quite an accomplishment, considering it was loose up on the hill and it was the hottest hill climb I can remember."

Schmidt’s time, a winner by 1:10 over 2001 BHC king Whitney Albright (37:38) and by 2:11 over 1997-98 and 2000 champ Bill Nurge (38:39), was a little over a speedy half-an-hour for the 3,140 vertical foot climb.

Indeed, the top 52 of Saturday’s racers broke 50 minutes compared to the top 40 racers breaking 50 minutes last year.

Winning the women’s category for the fifth consecutive year, and 10th time overall, was 44-year-old Adrienne Leugers (44:26). "Adrienne just keeps on cranking," Kapala said.

Hiking winners were Zac Brown and Jennifer Schwartz. Check this week’s Web site for a complete set of results including race history, and check the Oct. 15 Local Life for more photos of the 2003 Baldy Hill Climb.

Added Kapala about the hill climb, a fundraiser for the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation, "It was a great event. Now we just need it to snow."

September 27, 2003, the 25th annual benefit activity presented by the Sun Valley Junior Nordic ski team. A total 187 finishers to the top—74 hiking (37 female and 37 male, ranging in age from 7 to 65) and 113 racing (24 female and 89 male, ranging in age from 11 to 64, average age 38). Finishing times in minutes and seconds; hours, minutes and seconds. Overall finish and class finish listed by 1/1. Age after name. The 1.86-mile course rose 3,140 vertical feet from the Warm Springs ski run bridge—elevation 5,880 feet—to the top of Baldy—elevation 9,020 feet. Course records: Michael Tobin 35:11 in 1989 and Jen Douglas 42:46 in 1998.
