Candidates have ordered campaign signs and are preparing for the first
mayoral race the city of Hailey has seen in several years. The filing period for
mayoral and city council seats closes on Friday Sept. 26 at 5 p.m. The city has
received four valid declarations of candidacy complete with a valid number of
signatures.
So far, former mayor Al Lindley is the only candidate registered to run
against Mayor Susan McBryant in the election. McBryant, who was appointed after
Lindley resigned last year, will be running in her first election. Lindley ran
unopposed in 2001.
Council members Carol Brown and Rick Davis will be defending their seats,
number three and four, respectively, in the Nov. 6 election, but so far they are
unopposed.
"I hope somebody does run just to give people a choice," said Davis. "If they
do, I will be visiting grocery stores and going from door to door."
In the meantime, he is holding off with ordering his campaign signs until he
knows whether or not they are necessary.
Mayor McBryant says she has begun a "full and legitimate campaign" and has
already begun canvassing for support.
"I’ve been working on my campaign since June," she said.
The lack of a race in the council arena is an indication of the hard work
Brown and Davis have contributed, McBryant said.
"If you saw real problems in our city I think you would see another candidate
come forward," she added.
The last day to register to vote is Oct. 10. People can register at the
polls, but there is a closed window between the Oct. 10 and election day.
Registrants after Oct. 10 will not be eligible to vote absentee.
