Cutthroats work hard
to earn draw

K/SV, WRHS tie 1-1 in girls’ soccer

The Community School and Wood River girls’ varsity soccer teams played to a 1-1 draw in Hailey last Tuesday.

It was the fifth time the valley rivals have tied in 17 games, dating back to 1993.

Both teams had plenty of chances to win the contest, but could not seem to finish. Opportunity knocked, but no one answered.

Wood River carried the momentum in the game’s opening minutes, but the Cutthroats made it onto the scoreboard first.

Sun Valley’s freshman striker Sara Berman, known as the "garbage queen" for scoring scrappy goals, lived up to her nickname. She punched in a loose ball, up and over Danielle Donovan’s head (4 saves). The goal came at 7:40 into the first half and jolted the Wolverines into action.

With superior speed up front, Hailey hammered the Cutthroats’ goal, but could not find twine. Senior co-captain Charlotte Gourlay, who has racked up seven goals in six games, hit the crossbar. Shots by Ireland King and Margii Driscoll flew just over the top.

"I was pleased to score and have the lead at half-time," Sun Valley coach Kelly Feldman said. "But you are always waiting for the other shoe to drop when you are playing Wood River."

It dropped like J-Lo’s jaw when Ben told her goodbye. Midfielder Kate Elgee nailed a 25-yarder to knot the score 1-all early in the second half.

Wood River outshot the C-School 15-7 and took six corner kicks to none for the Cutthroats.

That means Ketchum was not putting enough pressure on Wood River defensively, although hearts were in the throats of the Wolverine faithful when Cutthroat Jenny Rutherford cracked a shot off the side-post with 17 minutes left.

Hailey hammered hard in the second half and had Ketchum running like a Nordstrom shoe salesman during a 50 percent off sale.

Despite some defensive lapses and mismatches, the Cutthroats, led by goalie Gussi Ochi (10 saves), managed to keep the Wolverines out of the net and preserve the tie.

"Gussi made some awesome saves," Feldman said.

Danielle Maniere was uncovered in the box and cracked a shot over the crossbar. Ochi then made three consecutive point-blank saves on shots by Gourlay, Maniere and Elgee. Rebecca Schwartzenberger hit the sidebar. If close counted Wood River would have won hands down.

Which is what Hailey coach Doug Stouffer expects to do when the teams meet again on October 14.

"I expect a different outcome," he said. "As we move on in the season, I think we will figure out how to finish games."

4-2 win for Cutthroats

The Community School girls’ soccer team claimed its second win of the season, bumping off Minico 4-2 in Sun Valley Saturday.

Morgan Arritola scored two goals. Jenny Rutherford and Cassidy Doucette tallied one each for the Cutthroats.

The Cutthroats are now 2-0-1 and have outscored opponents 10-4. Because of school trips, the team is idle until Sept. 23 when it hosts the Wood River jayvee.
