Mavericks fastest on Gun Club course

40 locals in 330-runner field

Meridian’s Tracy Harris, a king of Idaho cross-country running, came to Sun Valley and gave his blessing to the 3.1-mile course that winds through the foothills of the Sun Valley Gun Club.

Harris said he liked the course used for the annual Wood River Invitational prep cross-country meet, which attracted 330 runners to the Gun Club trails last Wednesday.

So did the Mountain View Mavericks, a first-year high school in Meridian that Harris is coaching—after Harris led the cross-town Meridian Warrior girls to four consecutive Idaho 5A state championships from 1999-2002.

At Sun Valley, 5A Mountain View (40 points) went 1-2-3 in the 71-runner boys’ varsity race and captured the day’s main team event by 11 points over perennial Idaho running power Vallivue of Caldwell (51), a 4A school.

Mountain View’s Sean Boone, ninth in the Idaho 5A state boys’ race last fall while running for Meridian, set a blistering pace and won by 20 seconds in 17:34 over Maverick runner-up Logan Katseanes (17:54).

The host Wood River High School Wolverine boys coached by James Foster and Joel Zellers did extremely well by placing in fourth place of eight teams with 90 points. Medaling was 10th-place Alex Hamlin (18:33).

Vallivue took a measure of satisfaction by winning the 100-runner girls’ varsity/junior varsity race in a 37-39 squeaker over Mountain View. That’s because Vallivue’s girls placed 1-2-3 led by senior Taryn Trapp (21:01), eighth in last year’s 4A state girls’ footrace.

Top Wood River girl, three minutes behind, was freshman Tess Dahlgren (24:01) in 18th. The Wolverine girls were sixth of eight teams in the standings.

Mountain View’s Dan Foster (19:42) won the 75-runner boys’ JV race and Wood River’s Conor Davis (20:16) was close behind in sixth.

There were 40 local runners in all—35 from Wood River and five from The Community School.
