Cutthroats (2-0) bring out the defense
Start strong with 3-0, 6-1 wins
They did it with devastating offense the
past two years, but the current Community School boys’ varsity soccer team may
pin its hopes much more on defense if the first two games of the season are any
indication.
Last week, the Cutthroats downed Magic
Valley Christian 3-0 behind the goalkeeping of senior Luke Fostvedt and then
posted their first league victory 6-1 over Buhl Saturday—both games played at
Browning Field.
Coach Richard Whitelaw said he saw
promising signs from his defense in front of Fostvedt—sweeper Ash Higgins,
stopper Reed Boeger, left back and captain Taylor Rothgeb and right back Corey
Warren. All are seniors, except Boeger is a junior.
Higgins was "Man of the Match" last
Wednesday in the season-opening 3-0 victory over Magic Valley Christian. Rothgeb,
Yancy Caldwell and Higgins (penalty) scored the goals.
The beginning of Saturday’s home league
battle against Buhl was delayed 45 minutes because of a hailstorm and rainstorm.
And it was tied 1-1 at half, with Buhl doing a good job of hustling to the ball.
Bobby Flanigan tallied the only Cutthroat goal of the first half.
Twelfth-year coach Whitelaw earned his
130th victory at the Sun Valley helm as the Cutthroats did a much better job of
finishing after intermission. Senior forward John Hayes punched home three
straight goals, the natural hat trick coming on a free kick, then Flanigan
completed his hat trick to make the final 6-1.
Hayes and Flanigan were named "Men of the
Match," by Whitelaw.
Today’s important home match against
arch-rival Wood River is one of several big games this week.
Friday at 4 p.m., The Community School
(2-0, 1-0 league) entertains a tough Bliss squad (2-0) that opened its soccer
campaign with 4-0 victories over Buhl and Filer. On Saturday, Minico of Rupert
arrives at Browning Field with the boys’ varsity and junior varsity taking the
fields for 1 p.m. games.
