The Blaine County School Board Trustees
last week accepted the recommendations of the Open-Closed Campus Committee,
which state that the campus be closed for incoming freshman this year and closed
to both sophomores and freshmen the following school year, 2004-2005. The board
is scheduled to vote on a final form of the policy at its August meeting at the
district office in Hailey.
In other business:
· Howard Royal, of Zone 1, was elected to
be the chairman of the Board of Trustees following the resignation of Claudia
Fiaschetti from the board. Cathy Pruett, Zone 3, was elected vice-chair.
· The new Wood River High School was
originally expected to be completed Friday, Aug. 15. However, Dave Maloney of
Kreizenbeck Constructors is anticipating handing over keys and a Certificate of
Occupancy on Friday, Aug. 1.
· Tom Bailey, former vice principal at
Wood River Middle School, has been awarded the job of principal at Hailey
Elementary, beginning this fall.
· Four new teaching contracts were
approved for the 2003-2004 year. They are a districtwide Roaming Guest Teacher,
two new social studies teachers at Wood River High School, and an English as a
Second Language teacher at Hailey Elementary.
Meanwhile, the board must replace
Fiaschetti by appointing a resident living within the Zone 5 boundaries to fill
the vacancy. The boundaries of Zone 5 are the east side of Highway 75 in Blaine
County, from East Fork north to the Custer County line.
Residents interested in the position
should apply to the board with a letter stating why they should be appointed to
the board. Letters should be addressed to Cathy Zaccardi, Clerk of the Board,
Blaine County School District, 118 West Bullion St., Hailey, ID 83333. The
deadline for receipt of letters of interest is Friday, Aug. 29, at 3 p.m.
The new member’s name will be placed on
the ballot for the Annual Board Trustee Election in May, to serve until the next
meeting of the board July 13 2004. The elected candidate will serve one year to
fill Fiaschetti’s unexpired term. At the election in May 2005 the elected
candidate may run for a three-year term.
The Board member’s duties and
responsibilities, in part, are attending regular monthly and special board
member meetings, establishing educational policies, determining personnel
policies and determining the educational and administrative structure of the
school system.
