Kids earn ribbons at State Hershey
Track meet in Fruitland
Blaine County children shrugged off the
heat of Fruitland and earned a slew of ribbons Saturday at the State Hershey
track and field meet.
Hailey siblings Juan Martinez and Kaitana
Martinez along with home-schooled Hannah Fuller collected the only individual
first-place finishes for Blaine County.

Fuller won the gold in the girls’ 13-14
long jump in 7-6, a foot farther than her state-qualifying jump.
Juan Martinez captured the boys’ 11-12
400-meter dash in 1:08.00. Kaitana Martinez won the girls’ 9-10 softball throw
in 100-10, 32 feet farther than her nearest rival, and she also took the 100m
dash in 15.62 seconds.
For the Martinez kids, all their winning
marks at the State Hershey meet were much better than their state-qualifying
marks at the Blaine County meet April 26 in Carey.
Blaine County did particularly well in the
relays—winning 400m baton-passing in the 9-10 and 11-12 classes.
Taking first place in the girls’ 11-12
relay was the Carey squad of Shelby Hansen, Amy Ellsworth, Krista Allen and
Taylor Whitby. The 1:02.00 time was nearly three seconds faster than their top
time in Carey.
