WRHS to interview for basketball job
Three qualified candidates on line
In August, Wood River High School will
interview three qualified candidates for its vacant position of head boys’
varsity basketball coach at the Hailey school, athletic director Ron Martinez
said Monday.
The three candidates who have all
expressed an interest in the coaching job are Jim Boatwright, Tim Richards and
Fred Trenkle. All are currently employed as teachers in the Blaine County School
District.
Boatwright, a newly-hired social studies
teacher at the high school, was a high school All-American basketball player at
Minico High School in Rupert. He played collegiate basketball at Utah State
University and has coached at the high school/collegiate levels.
Richards, also a high school teacher, is
entering his second year as Wood River’s head varsity volleyball coach. He also
coached the men’s volleyball program at the University of Alabama-Birmingham.
Wood River Middle School teacher Trenkle,
a Shoshone native, had the first coaching job of his nearly 30 years in the
business at Wood River. He coached Wood River cage teams to a 100-58 record in a
seven-year stint ending in 1980.
Subsequently Trenkle coached at the
University of Arkansas, the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls and San
Diego State University. At CSI, Trenkle had a remarkable 329-36 mark in 10
seasons, and one national NJCAA title.
Although he is not involved in the process
of choosing a coach, Blaine County superintendent Dr. Jim Lewis said he was
pleased that three such highly-qualified candidates were on the staff, already.
Jeff Larson, who had a 15-74 record in
four years at the helm of the Wolverine program, resigned June 19. Wood River,
which hasn’t had a winning season in a decade, will debut in a new gym in
November.
