Time trialers
fly along U.S. 20
State championships
Ketchum bicycle racer Richard Feldman owns
the Idaho State Time Trial championships. Stiff wind, however, can often own
bicycle time trialers.
That wasn’t the case Saturday along U.S.
20 from Timmerman Hill to Picabo. Several cyclists set personal records in the
2003 state time trial because wind was at a minimum.
Durance Cycleworks star Feldman won his
12th consecutive Idaho time trial title with a new state record of 50:00 for his
40-kilometer (24.8-mile) ride. His average speed for the out-and-back course was
29.76 mph.
The fastest 40k woman was Liza Rachetto,
29, in 1.02:22.
Patty Puz and rookie Priscilla Woods tied
for first in the women’s 60-64 age group at 20k. John Straka, recently returned
to racing, won the men’s 40-44 group at 40k. Rookie junior winner Michael
Matteson completed his first state TT.
Certainly the tallest cyclist in the race
was 40-year-old native German Detlef Schrempf, the 6-10, 240-pounder from the
University of Washington who played pro basketball for 17 seasons with four NBA
teams.
Sponsors were Durance Cycleworks, Lehman
Brothers, Trinity Springs and Jytte. In all, there was a record 36 cyclists in
the 40k and 20k events.
