Reynoso prevails in mound duel

WR blanks Minico 2-0

Look far and wide, but you’d be hard pressed to find a better pitching duel than the one that transpired Monday on a cold summer day at Founders Field.

Wood River’s Ryne Reynoso and Minico’s Cory Warburton hooked up in a battle of determined American Legion righthanders—and Reynoso prevailed 2-0 with a masterful five-hit shutout for Hailey.

Coach Lars Hovey of Wood River said the pitching duel was one of the best he has seen. The nine-inning game breezed along. It took only two hours and five minutes for the two pitchers to master the batters.

But graduating senior Reynoso (3-1) of reigning State 3A king Wood River was just a little better than Warburton (7 K), who as a sophomore sensation helped the Spartans to a 25-5 record and third at state.

With the win, Wood River improved to 5-7 overall and 5-3 in Area C Legion “AA” action.

Reynoso (6 K) wasn’t perfect.

He threw 138 pitches—57 balls—and walked six, but no Spartans with free passes reached second. Only two outfield outs were made. The rest of the action was in the infield including three double plays and two runners cut down.

For his part, Warburton was more efficient, throwing 94 pitches in eight frames, 75 for strikes. But he was so accurate that Wood River did a lot of first-pitch hitting and yanked a bunch of balls down the line.

In the third, Reynoso singled with one out, Paul Tinker (2 hits) followed with a single and Drew Detwiler (2 hits) pulled an RBI single down the left field line. A one-out double by Tinker and a Warburton wild pitch scored Reynoso with an insurance run in the fifth.

Catcher Kellen Chatterton, credited afterwards by Minico head coach Ben Frank for calling an excellent game, also had two hits for Hailey (9 hits).

Chatterton threw out a Minico base stealer in the first and picked a runner off first base in the fifth.

In the fourth, Wood River turned a 4-6-3 double play through second baseman Matt Conover and shortstop Detwiler. In the eighth, Detwiler made a great backhand stab of a tough grounder and turned a 6-4-3 double play with Conover.

With Minico threatening with no outs in the ninth, Conover grabbed a line drive and doubled the runner off second. In fact, it was nearly a triple play—but Reynoso struck out the final batter to win it.

Last Tuesday, Reynoso pitched another great game in a 2-1 home victory over Highland of Pocatello. Reynoso tossed a seven-inning three-hitter and whiffed nine Rams.

Because of Reynoso’s pitching and strong defense, all Wood River needed were single runs in the first and second. Steve Durkin singled and scored on Reynoso’s RBI single in the first. Then Dylan McIlhenny singled and scored on Joe Paisley’s RBI double.

Highland won the nightcap 5-4 despite a strong pitching job by Chatterton, normally Wood River’s catcher. Chatterton also had two of Hailey’s six hits.

On Saturday, Wood River endured a forgettable day hosting the tough Idaho Falls Russets at Founders Field.

The Russets outhit Wood River 39-13 and won both five-inning run-rule games by lopsided 11-1 and 22-2 scores. Idaho Falls is now 4-0 against Wood River this season with a 53-5 runs-against—but the Russets haven’t faced Ryne Reynoso.

Chatterton, Paisley and Durkin each had two hits.

“A” sweeps twinbill

Wood River’s Legion “A” squad (7-5) won its first doubleheader of the season last Wednesday, sweeping Madison of Rexburg 15-12 and 8-3 at Founders Field in Hailey.

In the first game Wood River built a 12-1 lead and held on as Madison rallied with a five-run fifth and six-run seventh. The winning pitcher was Tyler Thiede (2-1).

Leading hitters in the opening-game victory were Steve Hansen (3 hits, triple), Sagen Howard (3 hits, 2 runs), Tyson Reynoso (2 hits, 2 runs) and Thiede (2 hits, 3 runs).

Tyson Reynoso (3-1) got the mound win in the 8-3 nightcap triumph. Dylan Fullmer scored three runs while Kyle Lubeck chipped in with three hits (double, triple) and two runs.

Over the weekend Wood River split doubleheaders at Blackfoot and Pocatello.

Hansen (6 K) hurled a complete-game eight-hitter in Friday’s 7-6 win at Blackfoot. Wood River rallied from a 5-2 deficit with a three-run fourth and two-run fifth. Thiede and Fullmer contributed two hits apiece. Howard scored twice.

Wood River lost 9-5 in the Blackfoot nightcap as coach Hovey was ejected for the first time in some 400 high school games. Top hitters were Fullmer (2 hits, 3 RBI), Hansen (2 hits, 2 runs) and Michael Hesse (2 runs).

On Saturday, Thiede pitched well, didn’t allow an earned run but lost 8-1 to Pocatello. The Rebels broke it open with six unearned runs in the fourth. Huston Brashears had two of Wood River’s hits.

Wood River bounced back 9-5 in the second game as Brashears (1-1) earned his first American Legion win with a complete game on the hill. Hailey’s five-run third was highlighted by doubles off the bats of Hansen (2 hits), Thiede (2 hits, 2 runs) and Derek Abbott.

Over 12 games, top “A” hitters include Sagen Howard (16 hits, 12 runs), Hansen (14 hits, 11 runs, 7 RBI), Thiede (11 hits, 11 RBI) and Abbott (10 hits).
