¡Fiesta del Sol!
Lights the way

The Sun Valley Center for the
Arts is hosting Fiesta del Sol for the entire Wood River Valley community on
Saturday, June 21, from 2 to 10 p.m. at the Forest Service Park in Ketchum.
The Center has developed, Dos
Culturas, a multidisciplinary program that, over two months, will focus on
Mexican culture and the Mexican-American experience through educational
programs, fine arts displays, performing arts, literature and traditional
celebrations such as Fiesta del Sol.
A member of the Center’s
Hispanic Advisory board, Juan Salamanca, along with friends, community members
and musical group Youth Mariachi, will lead a dance-filled processional in
costumes to start the event. The parade will travel from the Center’s gallery
through the streets of Ketchum to the Forest Service Park.

At the park there will be
sundry performers scheduled, as well as crafts and activities. Performers
include Idaho Mexican American mariachi bands and folk dancers. Dance
instruction is available in traditional folk dance. A hands-on area for families
and children will introduce people to traditional crafts. Two area restaurants,
Taco San Marcos and Lunchera el Parralito, will offer food and beverages.
At 2:30 p.m. youths and young
adults of Folklor Latino de Boise will perform mariachi music and dynamic folk
dances in colorful authentic traditional costumes.
Norma Pintar, a traditional
Mexican Dance instructor from Boise will hold a workshop in traditional folk
dance at 3 p.m.
Aurora and Cirilo Martinez,
from Nampa, will present at 4:30 p.m. a variety of Mexican music from corridos,
to ballads about actual events or people, to boleros and romantic songs
This is followed at 5:30 p.m.
by a Mexican lariat demonstration with Jose Luis Heredia, followed by a
traditional dance performance by Norma Pintar and the Traditional Mexican
Dancers.
Folklor Latino de Boise
performs at 7:30 p.m. DJ Gustavo Alvarado spins tunes until 8:30 p.m. Mariachi
Sol Del Acapulco, one of the premiere mariachi bands of Idaho will take the
stage until 10 p.m.

Throughout the fiesta,
partygoers can learn how to make traditional Mexican paper flowers with Maria
Berain and contribute to a community altar. The community altar is being created
in honor of those who made safe journeys, whether it was a car ride to Hailey on
a snowy night, a plane trip across the country, or crossing the border.
All community members are
encouraged to contribute personal mementos to the altar, as well as decorate the
altar with tissue paper flowers, papel picado, and other decorative elements
traditionally included in Mexican altars.
There is free roundtrip bus
transportation from the Valley Market in Bellevue at 1:20 p.m. and St. Charles
Catholic Church in Hailey at 1:30 p.m. to the Forest Service Park with return
drop-offs to those locations departing from the Forest Service Park at 5 p.m.
An evening pickup at Valley
Market is at 5:20 p.m. and St. Charles at 5:30 p.m., with return drop-off to
those locations at 10 p.m.
