In the third of three single car rollover
accidents over Memorial Day weekend, 18-year-old Wood River High School junior
Sara Alstrom, was killed after being ejected from a 1991 Mitsubishi Montero. The
vehicle owned by fellow passenger Corey Kubin, 21, who was also ejected, was
being driven by the third occupant Shannon Engkraft, 19.
While initiating a passing maneuver
Sunday, Engkraft observed another vehicle coming from behind her also trying to
pass. Trying to correct from pulling in front of the second vehicle, she swerved
until the Montero careened into the barrow pit and struck a large sagebrush on
the east side of Highway 17, which started the vehicle rolling, said Blaine
County Sheriff Walt Feming.
Engkraft who was wearing a seat belt
sustained minor injuries and was released from St. Lukes Wood River Medical
Center. Kubin was flown to Saint Alphonsus Hospital in Boise for intensive care
and treated for head and facial injuries and a bruised lung. He was released
Tuesday morning.
Alstrom who had been asleep in the back
seat was pronounced dead by the county coroner, who removed her body from the
scene.
The crash is still under investigation by
the Blaine County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of the Idaho State
Police.
The first of the two previous rollover
incidents occurred at 3:30 Saturday when Katelyn Whitmire, 15, rolled a 2001
Ford Escape on N. Picabo Road. She was taken to St. Luke’s Wood River Medical
Center, where she was treated and released.
The second incident occurred at 1:15
Saturday when Mark Galica, 16, of Twin Falls, rolled a 1996 Chevy Blazer on
Highway 75 north of Galena pass. The Stanley ambulance took him to St. Luke’s,
where he was also treated and released.
