The publisher of the Idaho Mountain
Express, Pam Morris, was named Saturday by the Idaho Conservation League as the
recipient of the J. Robb Brady Award for Environmental Journalism.
The award, which recognizes excellence and
integrity in press coverage of environmental issues, was initiated by the ICL in
1999. It is named after the former publisher of the Post Register, a daily
newspaper based in Idaho Falls.
"We’re very honored," Morris said. "I
certainly think that writing about the great natural resources we have in Idaho
is an honorable calling."
The award was presented Saturday night at
the Redfish Lake Lodge, in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, during the
ICL’s annual Wild Idaho! Conference. The 2003 Wild Idaho! Conference was in part
a celebration of the organization’s 30th anniversary in environmental
activism.
Morris was on vacation during the
conference and could not accept the award in person. Nonetheless, in presenting
the award, ICL Executive Director Rick Johnson praised Morris as a thoughtful
proponent—and sometimes-tough critic—of Idaho’s environmental movement.
Since its formation in 1973, the
Boise-based ICL has established itself as one of the state’s most successful and
influential environmental groups. The nonprofit organization focuses on
protecting and restoring the state’s waterways, wild lands and wildlife.
Morris served as one of the early members
of the ICL Board of Directors.
"It’s important for everyone to understand
about the environment around them so they can learn to live in balance with it,"
she said. "This is a double honor for me because J. Robb is known for doing such
extraordinary work."
Brady was the first recipient of the award
in 1999.
