Carey girls grab final relay to nip
Raft River
Defending Northside Conference girls’
champion Carey outdistanced a strong field to win the first track meet of the
season in Carey Thursday.
The Panthers amassed 81 points to nip
perennial powerhouse Raft River by four points. For Carey, winning the final
medley relay put them over the top.
"For the first track meet they did
excellent," coach Lane Kirkland said. "We did it without Ginger Bingham and that
is 30 points right there. We still had enough to win it, though."
Bingham, a senior, is the current 1A state
champion in the 100-meter hurdles and an important part of the 1600-meter relay
team. According to Kirkland she bruised her eye in practice on Wednesday and was
advised not to compete the following day.
But there were no worries with Ginger’s
little sister, Cheyanne, on the track.
The Carey junior cruised to first place in
the 300-meter hurdles in 56.1. Bingham was sixth in the 100-meter dash in 14.3
seconds.
Freshman Brenna Silva stepped up big time,
winning the 400-meter race in 1:07.4. Teammate Nicki McAfee finished second in
1:08.5. Sophomore Melissa Peck was third in the two-mile run in 15:58.7 and
finished fifth in triple jump (27-5.7). Brooke McAfee was sixth in the 100-meter
hurdles.
Kiri Adamson leapt 28 feet, 8.5 inches to
win the triple jump. She was fifth in long jump at 13-6.2.
Jesse Molyneux, a state qualifier in
discus, finished third in a new event, the shotput, with a toss of 26 feet, 9.5
inches. Molyneux was sixth in discus. Sarah Lynn Shaffer was fourth in high
jump, clearing 4-2.
The medley relay team with Adamson, Silva,
Bingham and McAfee won by more than two seconds (2:04.4) to put the Panther on
top of the team standings. Carey was third in the 4x200 in 2:04.1 and fourth in
the 4x100 at 58.1.
Blaine Tingey’s boys’ team was runner-up
to the Trojans. Raft River was propped on top by Adam Darrington’s victories in
the 200 and 400-meter dashes. Shawn Hennefer was fourth in the 100 in 12.0
seconds.
Robbie Ellsworth finished second to
Darrington in the 400-meter dash, stopping the clock at 55.7.
Cody Hennefer topped the field in the 300
hurdles, winning in 42.1. He was more than three seconds faster than his closest
competitor.
Camas County’s Dakota Dalin won the 110
hurdles in 18 seconds flat. Destry Simpson was second in 20.1, Hennefer third in
20.7 and Seth Adamson fourth in 21.6.
Reigning district champion Destry Simpson
sprinted to victory in the 800-meter race in 2:10.0, clipping the competition by
six seconds.
In the mile, Joe Patterson clocked in at
5:40 for fourth place and Ty Simmons was fifth in 5:43. The pair was also fourth
and fifth in the 3200-meter run.
The Panthers placed in two of the four
relays, winning the medley (3:49.4) with Seth Adamson, KC Rivera, Shawn Hennefer
and Destry Simpson, and collecting second in the 4x100 in 48.4.
Points in the field events came from Shawn
Hennefer’s fourth and Seth Adamson’s fifth in the long jump. Bryson Ellsworth
was fifth in discus.
