Hobson a treat
for 147 skiers

Wood River Valley tradition

Nearly 150 youngsters from the Sun Valley and Hailey ski teams celebrated the end of a terrific winter season by participating in Sunday’s 26th annual Hobson Memorial on the Warm Springs side of Baldy.

Hobson Memorial overall female winner Lauren Parsons (left) shares a hug Sunday at Warm Springs with Mrs. Dorothy Hobson Krumm, longtime local resident who is the mother of the late Sheila Dolsot and the widow of Roy Hobson. The Hobson Memorial is one of the valley’s longest traditions, dating back to 1978. Express photo by Willy Cook

The two-run technical race honors the memory of Roy Hobson and Sheila Hobson Dolsot, and is sponsored by longtime local resident Mrs. Dorothy Hobson Krumm.

As Mrs. Hobson-Krumm said Sunday, the athletes had fun skiing and also had fun sharing the day with each other and their families.

Thanks to Sun Valley Company and many volunteers, over 300 people enjoyed the Hobson picnic on the Warm Springs Lodge terrace.

The kids zoomed down Hemingway run in hopes of having their names engraved on perpetual trophies to join the likes of honored Sun Valley skiing greats like Christin Cooper, Pete Patterson and Picabo Street.

J2 Lauren Parsons clocked the fastest women’s time, 28.11 seconds, while J1 Wes Powell posted the top men’s time with a finish of 25.69.

Fastest boys and girls in the J1 through J5 age classes were given perpetual awards. They were:

Darrock Crookes Trophy (top J1 boy)—Wes Powell 25.69. Susan Corrock Trophy (top J1 girl)—Tracy Chubb 28.47.

Pete Lane Trophy (top J2 boy)—Slater Storey 26.18. Christin Cooper Trophy (top J2 girl)—Lauren Parsons 28.11.

Smith Goggle Trophy (top J3 boy)—Teton Brown 27.90. Bonnie Russell Trophy (top J3 girl)—Grayson Palmer 29.54.

Billy Kleine Trophy (top J4 boy)—Barrett Cincotta 26.78. Kathleen Harriman Mortimer Trophy (top J4 girl)—Ali Maricich 28.59.

Pete Patterson Trophy (top J5 boy)—Chase Caulkins 29.62. Gretchen Fraser Trophy (top J5 girl)—Delaney Willey 31.53.

Along with the Hobson Memorial awards, the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation announced some of year-end awards. Others will be revealed at the alpine team’s April 15 banquet.

Sigi and Peggy Engl award winners for the development of excellent skiing skills, sportsmanship and academics were Nicole Roos and August Danielson from the "C" home team, and Grace Weaver and Bryce Ervin from the Sun Valley "D" team.

Devo teamers winning the Howard Dean Award were Hannah Thacker and Chris Carnes. The "D" team Coaches Awards were presented to Spencer Thomas and Adam Brown.

All perpetual trophies are on display in the Sun Valley Lodge in the hall outside the Lodge Dining Room.

Be sure to check the Express’ Local Life edition April 23 to see more photos of the Hobson winners.

The Hailey Ski Team will give its awards during its April 23 banquet.
