Stupid Pet Tricks at the Paw & Pole

Skiing with your dog—what a perfect way to spend a beautiful Saturday morning.

That’s the kind of fun that the 18th Annual Paw & Pole cross-country skiing event provided 29 racers, their dogs and about 75 spectators Saturday at the Sun Valley Gun Club.

It was a fund-raising event for Canine Companions, a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistant dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships.

"The Paw & Pole proved once again that you don’t need a pedigree to be a winner," said Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley volunteer Andrea Nelson, who trumpeted the efforts of two Shelter dogs that had never raced before.

All participants received an award and food was donated by Atkinsons’.

When asked by Bobby Noyes what "Stupid Pet Trick" she had devised for 2003, Doran Key displayed stylish Sun Valley skiers Sophie and Louis.  Express photos by Willy Cook

Donating prizes were Marjolaine Renfro, Sun Valley Animal Center, Sawtooth Animal Center, Price-Asher, Thunderpaws Express, Hound Around, "U Dig It," Linda Peterson, Canine Companions and Whitney Engelmann.

"Best Costumes," went to Abi Holt and Sam Adicoff.

"Stupid Pet Tricks" contestants were Dennis Botkin with Sam, Greta Harrison with Harold, Calder Zarkos with Mookie, John Michel with Wendell, Doran Key with Louis and Sophie, Patty Hogan with Daisy-Duke and Jennifer Montgomery with Cierra.

The event was underwritten by Renfro Engelmann Real Estate and organized by the Paw & Pole committee—race founder Bobby Noyes, Doran Key, Robert Renfro, Sue Engelmann, Cindi Sievers and Karin Horvath.

Other volunteers included Kathy Clark, Annie Williams, Linda Peterson, Lem Sentz, Jon Kellar, Virginia Holloway, Lila and Steve Wagner.
