Webb’s streak ends at Payette Marathon
18 locals race at McCall
Peter Webb’s amazing streak of five
consecutive Payette Lakes Marathon victories came to an end—barely—Feb. 22 in
McCall.
Chad Andersen of Bozeman, Mt. (1.29:41.8)
nipped Ketchum racer Webb (1.29:42.3) by less than a second for first place in
the 30-kilometer freestyle race at Little Ski Hill.
The pair finished about five minutes ahead
of third-place Eric Jensen of Boise (1.34:36.1). The women’s 30k winner was
Nicki Humphries of McCall (1.47:13.9) over Gabriele Andersen of Sun Valley
(1.49:02.8).
Hailey’s Andy Andrews (58:06.3) and
Darlene Young of Ketchum (58:05.5) were the fastest male and female skiers among
19 finishers in the 15k race at McCall.
A lower-than-expected turnout of 97
entrants started the 30k and 15k races, and 82 finished the 22nd annual Payette
Lakes Ski Marathon.
Mild temperatures and new snow slowed the
course so much that finishing times were 12-20 minutes slower than last
February’s race.
