Local equestrians in Arizona meet

10 Wood River girls

Ten girls from the Wood River Valley competed Feb. 19-23 in the Saguaro Classic staged at Tucson, Az. The USA Equestrian "A" rated show featured competitors from all over the U.S.—and 400 horses at the facility.

Idaho made a strong showing due to hard work of the kids, trainers and horses. Kim McDonald Koch was one of the trainers accompanying them. The girls had been riding with her three or four days a week to prepare.

Teresa Englehart was another trainer with students at the Tucson show.

Kat Dembergh captured the Junior Maiden Equitation over Fences Championship on her horse Great Expectations. She won three firsts and a second in Maiden Novice classes.

Katie Peterson’s horse Grappa won her the Medium Stirrup Hunter 17-and-under over Fences. Katrina Taft, owner of By Design, a 17-hand thoroughbred, won the championship in Medium Stirrup over Fences 17-and-under—as well as the Reserve Championship in Medium Stirrup Equitation 17-and-under.

Unfortunately Caitlin Cairncross was unable to compete on Fancy Footwork, due to sudden illness.

Yours Truly, ridden by Sami Taft, cleaned up in the Pony Equitation classes but shortly into the second day, the horse developed a virus, complicated by high fever, and Sami had to withdraw.

This was the first big show for Tory Pfaeffle and her pony Little Guy. The Oldenburg mare, Ruby Slippers and owner Kristen Monroe, joined the group of youngsters for the week as well.

Dillon Neaman, daughter of Susan and Nappy, competed in the Children’s Jumper classes on Skyler Spence. Jennifer Card, a local veterinarian, rode Quinn the Eskimo in the Adult Amateur Jumpers.

Tanya Sevy’s horses Tom Foolery and Brandon achieved success in the Open Hunter Low as well as Junior Maiden Equitation.

Brina Yates and her pony Boomerang won the Reserve Championship in Junior Maiden Equitation. Danielle Smith rode her bay pony, All Dolled Up, and placed high in the Junior Maiden classes, too.
