Downhillers join Soldier’s party

Racers help ski area turn 55


During the week of Soldier Mountain’s 55th anniversary celebration, downhill racers came to the Fairfield ski area to celebrate a tradition—the Soldier Mountain downhills.

Fifty-two downhillers competed in last Wednesday’s two-heat Soldier Mountain event.

The women’s winner was Danielle Palermo, while Richard Slabinski and Michael Gowe waged a tight race in the men’s event—tying for first place in the morning race with Slabinski winning the afternoon heat by .73 seconds.

Class winners Wednesday were Harold Wescott, Glenn McConkey, Keith Thompson, Stephen Slivinski, Jim Ruscitto, Gary Loritz, Russell Judge, Mike Levy, Alexander Fulton, Kim Verde, Deborah Lewis, Joanne Zwingenberg, Palermo, Marvin Melville, Slabinski, Gowe and Tim Carter.

Here are the top racers from the morning and afternoon:

Morning men: 1—Michel Gowe and Richard Slabinski 1:38.19. 3—Deeder Petersen 1:39.50. 4—Mike Levy 1:40.35. 5—Scott Levy 1:40.43. 6—Karl Stingl 1:40.46. 7—Randall Malin 1:40.70. 8—William Tabar 1:42.47. 9—Douglas Fulton 1:43.10. 10—Tim Carter and Ken Dreyer 1:43.14.

Sammis-Camas DHs

1990 U.S. national downhill king Skip Merrick of Ketchum and Sun Valley Ski Team racer Tracy Chubb were the men’s and women’s winners of last Tuesday’s Sammis-Camas downhill at Soldier Mountain.

Merrick (1:34.12) was 1.20 seconds faster than Carl Rixon Jr. (1:35.32). Chubb (1:44.38) finished ahead of Sun Valley teammate Charlotte Gourlay (1:45.61). Final times:
