Brown, Durkheimer pace Flood Memorial J1s

Rixon wins Saturday’s GS

Sun Valley Ski Team racer Zachary Brown and Hailey Ski team racer Laura Durkheimer clocked the best local J1 results at last weekend’s 13th annual Laura Flood Memorial alpine ski races on Baldy.

Brown, 18, won the men’s J1 class in Sunday’s slalom on Cozy, finishing second overall of 55 two-run finishers just .07 seconds behind race winner Mitt Coats, 16, of Salt Lake City/Park City Ski Team.

Zachary Brown of the Sun Valley Ski Team posted the second-best second run, behind Sun Valley’s Carl Rixon Jr., to finish second overall in Sunday’s Cozy slalom that wrapped up the Flood Memorial on Baldy. In Friday’s giant slalom won by Sun Valley’s Carl Rixon Jr., 20, over Jeff Sarchett, Brown finished eighth overall, the third J1. Top local J2 was Cameron Minor of Sun Valley, fifth in his class GS and SL.

Durkheimer, 17, finished eighth overall, the fourth J1, in Saturday’s Cozy slalom. She then cranked it up with the fastest first run in Sunday’s Hemingway/Greyhawk giant slalom and ended up second overall of 46 two-run finishers, and the second J1.

Lauren Parsons, Amy Alexander and Charlotte Gourlay were Sun Valley’s top J2 women. Winning both tech races was Dorothy Muirhead, 17, of Crested Butte, Colo., who races for Rowmark Ski Academy in Utah.

There were 78 men and 50 women from Idaho and Utah racing in the Intermountain Cup J1/J2 qualifying races hosted by the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation. They are staged in memory of Ketchum’s Laura Flood, who died in 1990 at age 19.
