Six straight for
Carey’s boys (9-2)

Panthers start 5-0 in league

Four games in five days didn’t bother the streaking Carey School boys’ varsity basketball team last week. The Panthers reeled off 29-point, 21-point, 20-point and 11-point wins to make it six straight victories.

Carey (9-2, 5-1 away) swept the non-conference season series with Oakley 55-44 Saturday night. Leading scorer Shawn Hennefer (18.2 ppg) poured in 16 points and Destry Simpson (8.6 ppg) had 14. Ty Simmons and Sean Cenarrusa added 8 each.

Coach Dick Simpson’s Panthers (5-0 league) opened 2003 with three Northside Conference wins last week.

Nine Panthers scored points in Friday’s 69-49 win at Richfield. Hennefer had 21, Simpson 18, Simmons 9, John Saili 5, Robbie Ellsworth 5 and Stephen Jurgensmeier 4.

The Panthers raced past the host Bliss Bears 66-37 Tuesday. Hennefer scored 10 of his 19 points in Carey’s 22-point first quarter. Simmons added 12 points and Blake Surerus 8.

Other Carey scorers at Bliss were Simpson 6, Saili 4, Kole Peck 4, Seth Adamson 4, Jurgensmeier 4, Ellsworth 3 and K.C. Rivera 2.

Carey caught the Dietrich Blue Devils shorthanded Wednesday. Dietrich’s 6-3 junior Vance Dill, sidelined with a broken finger, couldn’t play—and Carey vaulted to a 24-8 first-quarter lead.

Hennefer (three 3s) ended up with 13 of his game-high 19 points in the first half and Carey breezed 61-40. The Panthers out-rebounded Dietrich 34-23 and piled up 17 steals.

Surerus had an excellent all-around game with 6 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals and 4 assists. Simmons chipped in with 11 points and 8 boards while Saili added 10 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals.

Destry Simpson added 2 points, 2 boards, 2 steals and 4 assists. Jurgensmeier had 7 points, Peck 4 points and 3 steals, Ellsworth 2 points, Rivera 3 boards, 2 steals and 2 assists, and Sean Cenarrusa 3 rebounds.

Dietrich’s 6-1 senior Flint Dill led the Blue Devils with 16 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals.

Carey visits Shoshone (5-5 overall, 4-0 league) Friday, Jan. 17 for a big Northside league game. Standings through Monday: Carey 5-0, Shoshone 4-0, Community School 3-2, Richfield 2-3, Camas County 2-4, Dietrich 1-4 and Bliss 0-4.
