Topolino Shootout
a success
Eder, Mooseau place second
Sun Valley Ski Team racers
Lauren Eder, 14, and Dixon Mooseau, 14, came close to qualifying for a
prestigious trip to Europe last weekend.
Eder and Mooseau finished
second overall in the final men’s and women’s overall results of the Western
Region Topolino Shootout staged Saturday and Sunday at Snow King in Jackson
Hole, Wyo.
They became first alternates
from this region for the Trofeo Topolino races scheduled for Feb. 8-16 in
Pinzolo, Italy.
And by placing in the top six
in the Shootout they earned a trip to a National Development J3 race/camp in
Lake Placid, N.Y. Jan. 20-27.
In the 17-racer women’s group
over two days of giant slalom and slalom heats, Eder finished second to
14-year-old Amy Harris of Incline Village, Nev., who is the reigning Western J3
giant slalom queen.
Eder actually had better times
than Harris in the giant slalom events, but Harris pulled away in slalom races.
Sun Valley coach Hank Minor said, "Lauren skied hot. She won two of the GS
runs."
Tahoe’s Martin Harris, no
relation to Amy, won the boys’ final tally among 19 racers by a slim margin over
Western J3 GS bronze medalist Mooseau—although Mooseau finished all six tech
heats.
"Dixon had the fastest run of
the day in slalom. He’s at the head of his age group nationally," said Minor.
"Winning three of the four races in Jackson Hole before New Year’s was huge for
his momentum."
First-year J3 Shanny Cohen,
13, of Sun Valley placed seventh overall among the women and is first alternate
to the Lake Placid camp. Minor said, "These results are a product of our entire
program and coaching staff."
