GS, slalom for juniors
One week after
kicking off the season at the Western Region Open Series, many of the West’s
top alpine racers were back on Picabo’s and CB’s ski runs at Park City, Utah
last week for another season debut.
The Intermountain
Cup season kicked off with the Eric Hayes Memorial technical races—first
Junior Olympic qualifying races of the 2002-03 season for the older J1 and J2
juniors. And Sun Valley and Hailey skiers posted promising results.
Sun Valley’s
Jeff Sarchett and Robin Sarchett again placed in the top ten in the men’s
technical races.
Leading the
junior men were Sun Valley Ski Team racers Slater Storey (15th overall giant
slalom) and Ash Higgins, and Hailey Ski Team racer Laura Durkheimer (bronze
medalist in Friday’s giant slalom).
In all, 85 men
and 61 women competed.
Ted Ligety, 18,
of Park City won both giant slaloms Friday and Saturday, and slipped past Jacob
Dudek in slalom Sunday. Women’s winner in the first three races was Kimberly
Stephens, 19, of Park City.
