Sunsets enjoy a second-place buzz

In Beehive State hockey

Coach Chris Benson summed up the Sunsets’ weekend thusly, "Too much Swedish. Not enough Finnish."

Finish, meaning, of course, putting the puck in the net.

Playing in the Provo (Utah) Classic hockey tournament at the Seven Peaks Ice Arena, the Sun Valley women’s team finished second of 11 teams with a 3-1 record. The team scored seven goals and allowed five, but was shut out in the finale.

"We were not bad, considering we have not been on the ice much," Benson said. "It was just the same old story of not being strong on our shots."

Still, the Sunsets found the back of the net enough to make the finals of a tournament featuring teams from Utah, Idaho and California.

Roommates Kris Miller and Liza Weekes teamed up for Sun Valley’s lone goal in a 1-0 victory over Redwood City, Cal.

Saturday, Sun Valley staved off host Provo 3-2 on goals by Jini Griffith, Tizz Miller and Christl Holzl. Serving up assists were Larsen Peterson, Sarah Benson and Tizz Miller.

Sun Valley had the satisfaction of beating the Boise Blades 3-1 in the semifinals. Sheila Naghsh, Michele Hampton and Kris Miller scored.

Salt Lake’s Black Diamonds won the tournament, beating the Sunsets 3-0 in the final.

"It was a really good, even game. They had some fluke goals," captain Sarah Benson said.

Also lacing up their skates for the Sunsets were goalie Karen Morrison, Jennifer Embree, and Lucy Chubb. Honorary mascot was Seamus O’Connell.
