at Cancun triathlon

Ketchum’s
Charley French, 76, won his men’s 75-79 age class in Saturday’s
International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Triathlon Championships at
Cancun, Mexico.
It was
sweltering—temperatures in the low to mid-90s with 75% humidity. But
French captured one of 17 American age-group gold medals in a time of
3.13:02.
French
finished ahead of Walter Palmer of Indianapolis, Ind. and Robert
McKeague of Villa Park, Ill.
Heidi
Smith, 46, a mother of three from Ketchum, suffered from heat in the run
but was thrilled to finish 14th in the world in her 45-49 age group.
A total
3,000 athletes from 75 countries competed in the biggest event in
international-distance triathlon outside of the Olympics. Elite prize
purse was $165,000.
The
challenge was the 31.9-mile (51.5 kilometer) Olympic distance featuring
a 0.9-mile swim (1.5k swim), 24.8-mile bike ride (40k bike ride) and
6.2-mile run (10k run).
