Panthers achieve goals
Scoring
in each quarter, the highly-regarded Carey School eight-man football
team (7-0) stayed unbeaten Friday with a 50-0 mercy-rule shutout at
Shoshone (1-6).
Leading
scorer Shawn Hennefer (92 points season) scored three touchdowns and
rushed for a game-high 131 yards while quarterback Sean Cenarrusa, also
a senior, passed for 196 yards and three TDs.
Panther
coach Lane Kirkland said his team accomplished several goals in posting
its second straight shutout and staying atop the Sawtooth Conference
North Division with a league championship showdown against Castleford
coming Nov. 1.
"We
wanted to work on our passing game, and our defensive goal was not to
allow a point," said Kirkland. "We also wanted to get our
second and third teams in the game for at least two full quarters. I was
proud of our second-team defense."
Carey
also made it through a second straight league game without the services
of senior Destry Simpson, who injured his knee in the Sept. 27 game at
Richfield.
"Total
rest," and strengthening the muscles was the treatment for Simpson,
who was Carey’s leading rusher with nearly 500 yards in four games,
coach Kirkland said.
"Hopefully
we’ll have Destry back to play just defense in the game at
Dietrich," Kirkland said.
Running
backs Robbie Ellsworth and Hennefer have "done a great job,"
in Simpson’s absence, the coach added. "We’ve been working on
our running backs hitting and spinning and continuing to drive. Robbie
does that very well," Kirkland said.
Against
Shoshone, Carey’s balanced offense accounted for 230 rushing yards and
225 through the air. Robbie Ellsworth caught three passes for 107 yards
and John Saili grabbed three aerials for 69 yards and a TD.
Bryson
Ellsworth (8 tackles), Joseph Patterson (7) and Seth Adamson (7) led the
charge for coach Lee Cook’s defense.
PANTHER
NOTES—Amazingly, Carey has scored points in each of 24 quarters it
has played this season….The Panther defense has nine consecutive
shutout quarters and has allowed only one TD in the last 18 quarters of
action.
