Jane
Wooster Scott is probably one of the more recognizable artists in the
world.
The Sun
Valley resident creates oil paintings, giclées on canvas and
lithographs of mostly 19th century America. She, not
incidentally, has also been named by the Guinness Book of World Records
as the "Most Reproduced Artist in America."
‘A
Gentle Pace’ by Jane Wooster Scott
Wooster
Scott, who is now represented in the valley by Wood River Gallery, will
be present for an artist reception and opening of her exhibition 5 p.m.
Thursday at the gallery in Ketchum.
The
artist has said of her work, "The places I paint aren’t around
anymore, they’re fantasy places. One of the things my collectors say
is that I paint the world the way they’d like it to be.
"My
messages are simple ones: patriotism and living a happy, simple, country
life."
Wooster
Scott grew up on the East Coast, and much of her art reflects memories
of the area. She actually began her career life as a struggling actress,
eventually landing a job as the host of "Hollywood Diary," a
1970s talk show.
For years
she painted purely for personal reason, occasionally doing a painting
for a friend. It wasn’t until comedian, friend and fellow artist
Jonathan Winters asked her to share a show did Wooster Scott display her
art publicly. Her work was an immediate success; all of her pieces sold
out that evening. It was an evening that paved the way for her next,
very successful career.
