Team Sawtooth
slams the door
Wins Twin Falls
men’s softball meet
Unbeaten
in six games, Team Sawtooth consisting of seven Wood River Valley
players won the 24-team "D" division of the Twin Falls
Doorslammer men’s slow-pitch softball tournament Sunday in Twin Falls.
"It’s
the first time I can remember a Wood River team going down to Twin Falls
and winning the Doorslammer," said Team Sawtooth player/coach Bob
Sarchett, talking about the 23rd annual men’s meet.
Fueled by
its 15-14 victory over a Caldwell team in preliminary action, Team
Sawtooth dominated nearly all its opponents during the three-day
tournament sponsored by Falls Brand.
In the
winner bracket final, Team Sawtooth walloped Eaton Irrigation of Twin
Falls 16-8 as Ketchum’s Pat McGee (.522 for the tourney) went 3-for-3
with a HR, triple and 4 RBI.
Team
Sawtooth’s Robin Sarchett (17-for-26, .654 tourney) batted 5-for-5
with a triple, 3 doubles and 6 RBI in the 16-5 championship game win
over Moser Machine of Twin Falls.
Most
Valuable Player of the "D" tournament was Team Sawtooth
pitcher Scott Shumway, 54, of Boise, who also hit 20-for-24 (.833). His
sons Levi, a future College of Southern Idaho infielder, and outfielder
Garrod Shumway helped the Team Sawtooth cause in the Doorslammer.
Others on
the 11-player squad and their batting averages were Nelson Drewien .652,
Jeff Sarchett .565, Bob Sarchett .524, Randy Bahrenfuss .522 and Matt
Barrow .444.
Team
Sawtooth is planning to play in its fourth and final tournament of the
season Sept. 7-8 in Boise. The local men have done well so far—having
also placed second and third in Boise meets during June and July.
