Wood River Cup Mountain Bike
series wraps up

The 2002 Wood River Cup Mountain Bike series wrapped up its inaugural season with its seventh and final race of the season last Wednesday.

Held near Rotarun in Croy Creek, west of Hailey, the races, run in laps over a one-mile course, featured thrills, chills and hills galore.

Max Durtschi wheels over a rise.

Overall champions for the series were Mal Prior, Teagan Palmer, Jessie White, Jeremy Lato, Robert Slough, Georgia Gould, Sean Stephens, Moses Mexia and Randy Berner.

Jessie White was the only rider to compete in all seven races.

Last Wednesday’s race winners were Mal Prior, Teagan Palmer, Sam Farnham, Andrew Juliano, Robert Slough, Sean McLaughlin, Sean Stephens and Moses Mexia.

The races were held in conjunction with the Sun Valley Road and Dirt Camp, a camp for kids ages 8 and up to learn the ins and outs of mountain and road biking.

SVRD director Billy Olson remarked, "This has been an incredible experience. The reaction from the parents is the best. They are so fired up about what we are doing."

Camp riders learned everything about biking, from road and trail etiquette to how to put a bike together from the bottom up.

"I love cycling and it was my chance to give something back," Olson said. "I raced in Holland for a year and the difference between European cycling and American is the heritage. In Europe you have a 40-year old, a 20-year old and a 10-year old all racing for the same club. They pass it down from generation to generation. We are trying to emulate that here."
