Lowry, Harris lead Sun Valley swimmers

At Long Course Championships


Sun Valley swimmers Michele Lowry, 15, and Amanda Harris, 14, dominated their age classes during the 2002 Snake River Summer Long Course Championships July 26-28 at the Twin Falls City Pool.

Lowry set four pool records (*) and piled up five first places in the girls’ 15-and-over class. She won 100-meter backstroke (1:10.57*), 200m IM (2:33.27*) and backstroke (2:29.36*) and 400m freestyle (4:56.09) and 400m IM (5:24.26*).

Harris took eight wins in girls’ 13-14. She won 50m free (29.17); 100m free (1:06.08) and 100m backstroke (1:17.65); 200m IM (2:48.90), 200m free (2:23.79) and 200m backstroke (2:46.20); and 400 IM (5:54.08).

Coaches Brian Gallagher and Ed Flory took 22 swimmers to the three-day meet which drew 235 swimmers from Idaho, Nevada and Oregon.

Other individual golds for Sun Valley went to Mollie Parker 200m backstroke (3:06.25) in girls’ 15-and-over; and Anja Sundali 100m butterfly (1:18.96) in girls’ 13-14;

Also, Clayton Hardman, 8, won three races in boys’ 8-and-under—100m free (1:53.33), 50m breast stroke (57.11) and 50m free (45.31).

Winning the gold in the girls’ 19-and-under 200m medley relay (2:18.55) and 200m freestyle relay (1:59.57) were Sun Valley’s Mollie Parker, Amanda Harris, Anja Sundali and Michele Lowry. They placed second in 400m freestyle (4:35.00).

In the team standings Sun Valley finished fourth overall. Here are top individual placings for other locals:

2—Melissa Becker and Ashley Boand. 4—Sarah Brown and Calley Brown. 5—Racheal McGinnis, Krista Detwiler and Katie Bryson. 6—Esther Williams and Tristan Tanner. 7—Sage Howe, Shawnee Brew and McKenna Collins. 8—Niels McMahon. 10—Courtney Perry. 16—Mandy Alexander. 21—Chloa Fuller. 23—Stormy Mataya.

In fourth was the girls’ 12-and-under 200m medley relay with Esther Williams, Melissa Becker, Racheal McGinnis and Sarah Brown, and the 200m free relay with Shawnee Brew, Williams, Becker and McGinnis.


Special team awards included:

·  Michele Lowry was named Junior Athlete representative for Snake River Swimming.

·  Mollie Parker, Michele Lowry and Amanda Harris were recognized for qualifying for the Western Zone finals in Los Angeles Aug. 6-11.

·  Anja Sundali was honored for her performances at the 2002 Junior All-Star meet in Washington.

·  Mollie Parker, Michele Lowry and Katie Bryson were awarded for holding 3.5 or higher GPAs in school.
