Sun Valley to resurface Elkhorn Road next month

By GREGORY FOLEY
Express Staff Writer

Sun Valley City Council members last week approved a plan to resurface a busy section of Elkhorn Road later this summer.

The panel awarded a $357,000 contract on Tuesday, July 16, to Nampa-based Idaho Sand & Gravel to repave both sides of Elkhorn Road from City Hall to a point near the intersection with Village Loop Road, City Administrator Dan Pincetich said.

Pincetich said that "starting in August" the road will be torn up with special machinery that will recycle the old road surface material into a base for the new road. After the recycled base is complete, the road will be repaved with new asphalt and painted with lane stripes.

After the city solicited bids on the project last spring, it received an offer from Idaho Sand & Gravel to do the work for a cost of approximately $445,000.

After city officials determined that the project could be done for less, they proposed to the council that the city approve a less-valuable contract that did not include plans to chip seal the roadway.

Pincetich said the chip-seal project would be handled in the future as a separate project.
