Lefty’s F.C. opens at Missoula

Men’s soccer meet

Led by the scoring of Dom Conti and Josh Stanek and a decent early-season defensive effort, the Lefty’s men’s soccer team won two of its four games at the Missoula (Mt.) men’s tournament June 15-16.

In fact, defending Missoula champion Lefty’s had a decent chance of making this year’s title game. Bringing only 14 players, however, Lefty’s ran out of gas and lost 4-2 to Onyx of Butte (Mt.) in a semi-final game.

For the weekend, Conti piled up four goals and Stanek three. But Lefty’s didn’t have anywhere near the manpower as last June’s Archie Robb Memorial in Missoula, when they went 5-0 and outscored foes 26-4.

On Saturday, June 15, Lefty’s blanked Missoula U-19 by a score of 2-0, with goalkeeper Olin Glenne getting the shutout, then followed that win with a 4-2 victory over Bozeman. Conti tallied four of the six goals.

Lefty’s, having already qualified for a semi-final berth, fell 1-0 to the Missoula men Sunday morning with Conti in the goal.

Against Onyx in Sunday’s semi-final, two early Stanek goals put Lefty’s on top 2-0—then Lefty’s hit the wall with time running out in the second half. Onyx tallied three goals in the final 15 minutes to prevail 4-2.

Among the standout Lefty’s players on the weekend were defender Nick Walker, Mike Stevens, John Gerdis and John Andonian.

Upcoming tournaments are July 13-14 at Park City (Utah) and July 27-28 at Jackson Hole (Wyo.). The annual Sun Valley Classic men’s tournament is Aug. 10-11.

The Lefty’s men’s soccer team practices Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 p.m. on the lower field at Ketchum’s Atkinson Park.
