SV Sprint Triathlon returns July 6-7

18-mile endurance test in Sun Valley

Save-money entry deadline is Monday, July 1 at 5 p.m. for the 17th annual Sun Valley Sprint Triathlon.

It’s an 18-mile entry-level endurance test scheduled for July 6-7 that is sponsored primarily by Sun Valley Athletic Club (726-3664). The race is dedicated to the late Dick Pomeroy.

There is individual competition for men and women in seven age divisions, along with team contests in men's, women's, mixed, family and 19-and-under divisions.

Entry fees paid by July 1 are $30 individual, $60 per team. After July 1, the fees are $35 and $66. If you’re 19-and-under, the fees are $20 individual and $45 team before July 2.

Pick up entry forms at Sun Valley Athletic Club or the Idaho Mountain Express office in Ketchum.

Awards are given to the first- through third-place finishers overall, and the top three in each age class.

Mandatory pre-race meeting is scheduled for Saturday, July 6 at 4:30 p.m. at the Sun Valley Olympic pool. Swimming heats will be drawn and posted at the pre-race meeting.

The 0.5-mile swimming portion of the two-day triathlon occurs there at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 6. Sign up early for the best swim times.

On Sunday, the 13.2-mile bicycle ride and 4.3-mile run on pavement and trails gets underway at 8 a.m. from the Trail Creek Cabin staging area east of Sun Valley. Bicycle helmets are required.

Last year's field of 114 athletes including 72 individuals was led by Boise’s Keith Folske (1.12:01). The women's winner was Angela Strickland of Ketchum (1.24:05).
