Six podiums at JOs, Tech finals

For Sun Valley, Hailey skiers


Thirty-two Sun Valley and Hailey alpine skiers spent last week competing in three separate season-ending Western Region competitions.

And they did very well, racking up six podium finishes including one victory and three silver medals.

 

J1-J2 Olympics at Bend

Boise State University’s Hailey Duke of Hailey won the silver medal in Saturday’s J1/J2 slalom at the Chevy Truck USSA Western J1/J2 Olympics in Mt. Bachelor, Ore.

Sun Valley’s Jason Eder won the downhill silver medal Thursday, just .81 seconds off the winning pace. And Sun Valley’s Sean Higgins clocked the best second-run time to place second in Saturday’s slalom.

There were 99 men and 64 women at the regional meet. Here is a week’s summary of placings for the locals:

·  Laura Durkheimer 5-GS, 18-SG, 24-DH, DNF-SL; Jessica Hamilton 16-SG, 36-DH, 11-SL; and Hailey Duke 10-GS, 25-SG, 26-DH, 2-SL.

·  Sean Higgins DNF-GS, 28-DH, 34-SG, 2-SL; Wes Powell 2-GS, 8-DH, 69-SG, DNF-SL; Zachary Brown 3-GS, 16-DH, 4-SG, 10-SL; Jason Eder 23-GS, 2-DH, 35-SG, 8-SL; Marcus Acker 42-GS, 67-DH, 23-SG, DSQ-SL; and Luke Speer 55-GS, 56-DH, 53-SG, DNF-SL.

 

J3 Olympics/J4 Festival

Sun Valley’s Dixon Mooseau posted the best result with a bronze medal in Saturday’s men’s slalom during the Chevy Truck USSA Western J3 Olympics/J4 Festival at Mt. Hood Meadows, Ore.

There were 100 men and 70 women competing. Here is a week’s summary of placings for local skiers:

·  Lauren Eder 12-SG, 18-GS, 14-SL; Cassidy Doucette 13-SG, 24-GS, DNF-SL; Laura Speck 46-SG, 47-GS, DSQ-SL; and Lauren Parsons 21-SG, 36-GS, 21-SL.

·  Dixon Mooseau 4-SG, 3-GS, DNF-SL; Kristian Timmons 22-SG, 12-GS, 13-SL; Willi Cannell 55-SG, 17-GS, 49-SL; Taylor Stoecklein 49-SG, 48-GS, 28-SL; Miles Fink-Debray 77-SG, 8-GS, 42-SL; Dewey Moss DNF-SG, 7-GS, 27-SL; John D. Anderson 30-SG, 45-GS, 34-SL; and Luke Chaney 26-SG, 28-GS, 19-SL.

In the J4 Festival, Sun Valley’s Shanny Cohen won the slalom silver medal Saturday. Other J4 placings: Shanny Cohen 5-SG, 4-GS, 3-Combined. Also: Tristan Brown 12-SG, 8-GS, 5-SL; and Barrett Cincotta 9-SG, 6-GS, DSQ-SL.

 

Western Tech finals

Eight Sun Valley Ski Team racers competed at the Western Region FIS Technical Championships March 21-24 at Sugar Bowl Ski Resort, Ca.

Highlight, of course, was Charlotte Gourlay’s .40-second victory in Thursday’s women’s giant slalom. She was fourth in giant slalom. Sage Pressman placed fourth in slalom.

There were 72 men and 53 women competing. Here is a week’s summary of placings for local skiers:

·  Charlotte Gourlay 1-GS, 4-GS, 18-SL, 11-SL; Sage Pressman 11-GS, 18-GS, 4-SL, DNF-SL; Amy Alexander 27-GS, 19-GS, 6-SL, DNF-SL; and Abby Dubois 19-GS, 30-GS, 30-SL, DSQ-SL.

·  Slater Storey 12-GS, 16-GS, 27-SL, 30-SL; Matt Job 19-GS, 19-GS, DNF-SL, 37-SL; Ash Higgins 28-GS, 24-SL, DSQ-SL; and Cameron Minor 21-GS, 27-GS, 39-SL, DNF-SL.
