Jivaro, La Mexicana gain upper hands

In men’s cage tourney

Defending league champion Jivaro (13-3) gained the upper hand in the 2002 Sutton & Sons Men’s Basketball League "Upper" tournament with a 58-49 upset win over previously-unbeaten Croy St./Sun Valley Brewery Sunday in Hailey.

Darryl Tullis scored 15 points to lead Jivaro and offset 16 points by Sun Valley Brewery’s Matt Nelson. It was the first loss of the season for Croy St./Sun Valley Brewery, which still has a chance in the double elimination tournament.

Tuesday night’s "Upper" semi-final matched #7-seeded Sawtooth Paint/Soundwave (11-6) and top-seeded Croy St./Sun Valley Brewery (14-1).

Jivaro will play the winner of Tuesday night’s game between Sun Valley Brewery and Sawtooth Paint tonight, Wednesday at 8:15 p.m. in the "Upper" championship game on the Wood River Middle School gym hardwoods.

But Jivaro will have to lose twice to surrender its title.

In other "Upper" tournament games last week:

Dave Morgan (23 points and 17 points) led Cinderella Sawtooth Paint to a pair of closely-contested wins—73-63 over #4 Miley Roofing (10-5) and 72-68 over #6 Sutton & Sons (11-6). Ben Benson had 21 for Suttons.

And Sutton & Sons ousted Lefty’s/Casino (10-6) 70-64 with Lance Lancealot scoring 31 points for the winners and Scott Seaward 26 for Lefty’s.

Meanwhile, top-seeded La Mexicana (8-7) breezed into the "Lower" division championship game with a 103-51 victory over Alpine Masonry.

The "Lower" division’s Cinderella team was Whiskeys/Sawtooth Club, which snuck into the semi-final with a pair of thrilling three-point victories. Rase Littlefield had 23 points in Whiskeys’ 48-45 win over The Valley Club.

Clashing in Tuesday’s "Lower" semi-final were #5-seeded Whiskeys (4-12) and #2-seeded Alpine Masonry (7-9). The winner plays La Mexicana tonight, Wednesday at 7 p.m. on the middle school hardwoods.

League party is Saturday

The men’s basketball league will hold its annual end-of-season party Saturday, March 23 at 7 p.m. at the Red Elephant in Hailey. Cover charge is $5. There will be entertainment through closing time.

Food and drinks will be provided by Hayden Beverage, Sun Valley Brewery and the Red Elephant. Any proceeds from Saturday’s party will go to local youth basketball projects. All players and supporters are welcome to attend.
