Sunsets pull double
whammy on Jackson
Win Wyoming
tournament
No matter
how long between games, the Sunsets always seem to be in winning form.
Idle for
three weeks, the Sun Valley women’s hockey team won the Jackson Hole
Invitational Sunday, defeating host Jackson Hole 4-1 in the championship
game.
The Sunsets
went 4-0 and outscored their foes 22-4.
Solo goals
for the champs in the finale were put in by Kris Miller, Georgia
Hutchinson (shorthanded), Wendy Speth (empty net) and Lucy Chubb.
The
tenacious Miller, co-recipient of the Georgia jacket, scored shorthanded
while Hutchinson and Jini Griffith also lit the light in a 3-1 victory
over the Motherpuckers earlier in the tournament.
In their
opening contests, the Sunsets rolled over Idaho Falls 8-1 and Salt Lake
City 7-1. Speth scored five goals in the two preliminary games and
Hutchinson chipped in three.
"We
went over with 10 skaters and a goalie and we had very good momentum all
weekend," captain Speth said.
"It
was pretty clear that we wanted it more. Every one of us was digging deep
and gave 110 percent all weekend."
Goalie
Karen Morrison and Miller shared the MVP award.
"She
(Karen) made some crucial saves. She was tested against Jackson and came
through," Speth said.
Scoring
breakdown: Speth 6/4; Hutchinson 5/3; Miller 3/1; Chubb 2/2; Julie
Bell-Anderson 1/2; Sarah Benson 1/1; Edith Iler 1/0; Lia Johnson 1/0; Liza
Weekes 1/0; and Griffith 1/0.
The Sunsets
and Fury will host the Ski Town Shootout, March 1-3 in Sun Valley.
