Deep freeze: Midgets #1 put foes on ice

Jackson arrives this weekend

Answer: Deli meat and the Sun Valley Midgets #1 team.

The question: What is on a serious roll?

You don’t need Carnac the Magnificent to tell the Suns are clicking on all cylinders.

Winning six and tying two of their last eight games, the Suns (9-1-2) are now in sole possession of first place in the Intermountain Hockey League.

Boise is second at 8-3-1. Jackson Hole is third with a 4-0 mark. 4—Rock Springs, 4-4. 5—Sun Valley #2, 4-8. 6—Ogden, 3-7-2. 7—Idaho Falls, 3-4-1. 8—Salmon, 3-5. 9—Las Vegas, 3-9.

The high school Suns were rocking and rolling in league games at Idaho Falls, Dec. 15-16.

Sun Valley defeated Idaho Falls 4-3, Boise 4-2, and Rock Springs 9-1. The Blades and Suns also skated to a 4-all tie.

Weekend scoring was paced by first-line center Bobby Sloper with 8 goals and 2 assists. Tyler Klune nailed 5 goals and 2 assists.

Also: Matt Conover 3/3; Kent Grimes 1/5; Zach Bloomfield 1/3; Cody Lampl 1/3; Justin Taylor 1/2; Noah Loyd 0/2; Trevor Thomas 0/2; and Kellen Chatterton 1/0.

Sun Valley’s #2 squad (4-8) skated to a 5-3 victory over Salmon. Tyler Klune scored twice. Other lamp lighters were Justin Taylor, Matt Conover and Richard Boullion.

Idaho Falls edged the Suns 3-2 and also defeated them 3-0. Scoring goals were Noah Loyd and Kent Grimes off assists by Tristan Potters and Lampl.

Lampl and Grimes twined a pair of goals in a 4-2 loss to Rock Springs.

Goalies Corey Simpson and Blake Schnebly saw plenty of rubber in eight games. Schnebly came up with 127 saves and Simpson gloved 97.

Coach Randy Berner remarked, "I thought the guys showed their love of the game. We only had 16 guys and most of them played seven games. Kent and Cody played eight games.

"The fact is we played so well they were eager to get on with the next game. It was a real team-building experience for the guys that went. That was neat."

The #1 squad will face off against Jackson Hole at 5 p.m. this Saturday in a fundraiser for the teams. Tickets are $3 at the door. The sextets will also duel at 9 a.m. Sunday.
